B.E.S.T. Robotics Club – Boosting Science, Technology, and Engineering

Thank you for your interest in joining the 2019 Oak Mountain High School BEST Robotics Club! This club is open to OMHS students, OMMS 8th graders, homeschoolers, and any students whose school does not offer a BEST club or team.

Meetings are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm-8pm and every Saturday 9am-2pm in the first trailer at OMIS.

Student members are required to attend a minimum of 50% of meetings, the more you can be there the better. Adult mentors are present at every meeting.

There are three divisions in the club:

  1. Engineering Division
    1. Build the game field
    2. Complete the Engineering Notebook
    3. Design and fabricate the robot
    4. Program the robot
  2. Marketing Division
    1. Develop a marketing scheme
    2. Write and present speeches
    3. Design business cards and brochures
  3. Creative Division
    1. Design, build, and paint a marketing booth
    2. Design the club t-shirt
    3. Create a game and prizes for the booth
    4. Create spirit items (i.e. noise-makers, spirit sticks, etc)

You are not limited to one division. It is encouraged to do a little bit of everything. All the divisions work together but separately at the same time. Leadership members will comprise the Presentation Team.

Local Competition:

  • Kick-Off Day is Saturday, September 21 at Gadsden State Community College (Beck Conference Center) from 8 – 12:30. The field and game rules will be unveiled at this event.
  • East Alabama BEST competition is on Saturday, November 2 at Jacksonville State University. Team members will provide their own transportation. It is about one hour and 30 minutes away. Members will need to arrive by 7:45 am. The competition will last all day. More details will be provided closer to time.
  • Marketing presentations take place at Central Alabama Community College – Talladega on Friday, November 1. The Marketing and Presentation Team will leave early that morning to deliver their speeches and return after lunch. Transportation will be provided.

Regional Competition:

  • The top 3-5 teams from each local hub advance to the regional competition, South’s BEST.
  • South’s BEST is a 2-day competition at Auburn University on December 7-8. The presentation time slots are on Saturday, so the Marketing and Presentation Team will not go down the day before for this competition.

This team is not funded by OMHS therefore a registration fee is required. The cost will be $25 for the first student in a family and $20 each for additional student in the same family. Student t-shirts are included in the registration fee. Extra t-shirts for students and adults may be purchased for an additional cost of $12. All other funds needed for the team are raised through corporate and personal donations, yard sales, etc.
