About Us

The Oak Mountain High School robotics team—also known as Oak Mountain High-Tech Solutions—competes in the BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science & Technology) robotics competitions.

The team has six weeks to:

1. Design and build a robot to perform a series of functions.
2. Draft an engineering notebook that describes the engineering process.
3. Construct a marketing plan that could be used to sell the robot.
4. Construct a trade-show booth that will be used to inform potential customers about the “OMHS company” and its product.

The Oak Mountain High School robotics team was formed the summer of 2007 by two individuals who had an interest in perusing careers related to engineering, technology, and science. At the time sophomores in high school, Tanner Powell and Cory Rochester, wanted to bring Engineering to Oak Mountain High School. The team continued to grow when Jim Carman came on board as the first mentor. His oldest son, who was homeschooled, joined the team expanding it to become a combination of public and home schooled students.

In 2007, Blazer BEST had not yet been established, so the team traveled to Decatur to compete at the Tennessee Valley BEST hub. They brought home awards for both the website and t-shirt design. The team continued to expand as more engineering and creative design-minded individuals joined. In 2008 Blazer BEST was formed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. 2017 produced one of the largest senior classes on the team. In response to this, members were recruited from 8th graders in the VEX IQ robotics class at Oak Mountain Middle School for the following year.

When UAB ceased to be a BEST hub in 2015, Oak Mountain High-Tech Solutions was warmly welcomed at Central Alabama BEST. This year we are excited to be a part of the East Alabama BEST hub again. Year after year, Oak Mountain High-Tech Solutions has brought home numerous awards at each competition.

It is always a thrill to earn the opportunity to move on to compete at South’s BEST at Auburn University.

Our company strives to keep in mind the values of teamwork and quality from manufacturing to marketing. Our ultimate goal is to perform with high standards in all areas of BEST. In robotics, spirit, oral presentation, website, notebook, and t-shirt design Oak Mountain High-Tech Solutions is a team that can win—and does.
